"The Netherlands" refers today to three political entities: * A country in Western Europe, see Netherlands * A kingdom in Western Europe and the Caribbean, see Kingdom of the Netherlands * A European Parliament constituency, see Netherlands (European Parliament constituency) "The Netherlands" can have a broader meaning, for which the term Low Countries may be used. This is because the area called "the Netherlands" historically also comprises the "nether lands" outside of the modern-day Netherlands (in Belgium, Luxemburg, Northern France and Germany). "The Netherlands" in its original meaning is still used in historical context, and also in the following geopolitical designations: * Burgundian Netherlands: the "nether lands" belonging to the Duchy of Burgundy (1384–1477) * Habsburg Netherlands: the lands belonging to the House of Habsburg (1477–1556) * Spanish Netherlands: the lands belonging to the Spanish Empire (1556–1581/1713) * * The Northern Netherlands: the lands in the northern part, belonging mainly to the Dutch Republic (1581-1794) * * The Southern Netherlands: the lands in the southern part, belonging i.a. to the Spanish Netherlands (1581-1713) and the Austrian Netherlands (1713-1794) * United Kingdom of the Netherlands: the lands that were reunited under William of Orange-Nassau (1815-1839) In 1839, the United Kingdom of the Netherlands split into three new countries. The northern part kept the name "Kingdom of the Netherlands", giving "Netherlands" the restricted meaning it has today. The other two parts were Belgium and Luxemburg.
